Goslings Black Seal Rum

Gosling's Black Seal Rum - "The Spirit of Bermuda".
The history of Black Seal Rum® and the Gosling family began long ago. In the spring of 1806 James Gosling, the oldest son of William Gosling, wine and spirits merchant, set out from England on the ship, Mercury, with £10,000 of merchandise, bound for America.
After ninety-one desperate days on a becalmed sea their charter ran out, and they put in at the nearest port, St. George's, Bermuda. Rather than pressing on for America, James opened a shop on the King's Parade, St. George's in December 1806.
In 1824 James returned to England and his brother Ambrose rented a shop on Front Street in the new Capitol of Hamilton for £25 a year. The Gosling's have maintained a store at this location for 127 years.
In 1857 the firm was renamed Gosling Brothers by Ambrose's sons. Three years later the first oak barrels of rum distillate arrived in Bermuda. Three years later, after much trial and error, the distinctive Bermuda black rum destined to be Black Seal was formulated and offered for sale. They didn't call it Black Seal at first. In fact, up until the First World War it was only sold from the barrel, and most folks brought in their own bottles for a fill up. Eventually the black rum was sold in champagne bottles, reclaimed from the British Officer's Mess, and the corks sealed with black sealing wax.
Pretty soon people began to ask for the Black Seal. Many years later the idea of the little, barrel juggling Black Seal was born.
Over the years Black Seal has become synonymous with Bermuda. It is the essential additive to Bermuda fish chowder, adds the island touch to Bermuda Rum Swizzle, and is the tempest in Bermuda's favorite cocktail the Dark 'n Stormy®.

Goslings Gold Bermuda Rum

With a rich golden amber colour and elegantly soft, vanilla tones. It has a taste of creamy, toasted oak with apricots and vanilla. For generations, the Gosling name has stood for smooth, complex and decidedly dark rums. But times, and tastes, change.
So, to satisfy the increasingly vociferous requests for a Gosling's Rum with a lighter body, Goslings present Gosling's Gold Bermuda Rum, their first new product in 108 years.
Not to be mistaken for ordinary amber rums, Goslings was years in the making, sipping and perfecting. The result is a mellow, elegant product that lives up to its impressive lineage.
By using the finest distillates in strict accordance with techniques handed down over six generations, they finally created a distinctive lighter rum that is impressing demanding rum enthusiasts everywhere.
This is a well balanced blend of pot still distillates and continuous still distillates. The majority aged five years. This unique, proprietary blend is what sets Gosling's Gold apart from others.
You'll find it has a rich, golden amber colour, a nose of vanilla, apricot, mango and a lightly smoked oak character. The taste is smooth and light with hints of citrus/tropical flavours and nutty undertones.
Unusually versatile, it can be enjoyed straight, on-the-rocks, with ginger ale or as a mixer to enhance any rum recipe.
In 1806 the Gosling brothers decided to expand their business from London to New England. James Gosling set sail with a cargo of wines and spirits on The Mercury but storms hindered the journey forcing him to dock in Bermuda. Making the best of an uncertain situation, James opened a shop in St. George's, in December 1806. the Gosling family has been in Bermuda ever since… Over 200 years! Gosling Brothers is Bermuda's oldest business.

Goslings Family Reserve Old Rum

Aged in once used Bourbon barrels. It has a wonderful deep mahogany colour with a taste of prunes and soft oak along with chocolate, coffee ripe bananas and port. 155 years seems long enough. So the deep, dark secret rum that we Goslings have enjoyed for generations is now going public. Appropriately called Gosling's Family Reserve Old Rum, it is crafted from the same incomparable Bermuda blend that they use for their renowned Black Seal Rum. But, they leave it resting in oak barrels even longer, aging it until it has acquired an extra luscious, nuanced complexity much like a rare Scotch or Cognac. Consider it the ultimate sipping rum.
A spirit this unusual deserves more than the usual bottle and label. So they lovingly take each bottle, hand label it, dip it in wax, number it, encircle it with a metal band and then place it in a straw-filled wooden box reminiscent of days past. Finally, with not too modern merchandising, they substitute a clear Plexiglass sliding panel for wood, so that all this hard work can be viewed at home.
The Perfect Old Rum Recipe:
1 oz. - blah, blah, blah
1/2 tsp. - blah, blah
2 oz. - blah, blah, blah
Dash - blah
Gosling's point? Old Rum is built to savour as it is poured. Add ice if you must, but nothing else other than a little eager anticipation.
Awards - Double Gold Medal - San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2005.
Gold Award, Premium Category - International Rum Festival, St. Johns, Newfoundland 2004.
The packaging is hand dipped, labelled and numbered and was inspired by the original Old Rum packaging. Only 9000 bottles are produced each year.
